What is a hosted virtual contact center?
A hosted virtual contact center is a contact center technology platform where all infrastructure — telephony switching, call routing, agent software, call recording, IVR, and reporting — is hosted and managed in the cloud by a vendor rather than on hardware owned and operated by the customer. Agents connect via internet browser or softphone rather than proprietary desk equipment. The operation is "virtual" in the sense that it has no physical telephony infrastructure requirement on the customer side.
How it differs from an on-premise contact center
In an on-premise contact center, the PBX, ACD (automatic call distributor), call recording servers, and reporting systems are installed at your facility. You purchase and own the hardware, hire staff to manage it, plan capacity in advance, and absorb the cost of upgrades when the vendor releases new versions.
A hosted contact center moves all of that to a vendor-managed cloud environment. The vendor handles hardware, redundancy, software updates, and capacity. How it differs from UCaaS
UCaaS (Unified Communications as a Service) platforms — Teams, Zoom Phone, RingCentral — are designed for general business communications. Voice calls, video meetings, messaging. They're built for employees communicating with each other and with contacts. The workflows are ad-hoc.
A hosted contact center is built specifically for high-volume, managed inbound and outbound customer interaction. Organizations sometimes try to run a contact center on a UCaaS platform and find that the operational visibility and control they need simply isn't there. The two product categories solve different problems.
What infrastructure a hosted virtual contact center runs on
Most credible hosted contact center platforms run on major cloud infrastructure — AWS, Azure, or GCP — with geo-redundant deployments that prevent a single region failure from taking the system down. The telephony layer connects to the PSTN (public switched telephone network) via SIP trunking managed by the vendor.
What the vendor provides, and what you're evaluating, includes:

- The IVR system: Manages self-service flows before calls reach agents, and collects data that informs routing decisions.
- The agent desktop: The interface agents use to handle contacts — ideally a single interface for all channels (voice, email, chat, SMS).
- Call recording: Stores interaction recordings for compliance, QA, and dispute resolution.
- Reporting and analytics: Real-time dashboards and historical reporting on queue performance, agent metrics, and interaction data.
- Admin tooling: Configuration interfaces for supervisors and administrators to manage routing, scripts, and user settings without vendor involvement.
What separates a managed hosted platform from a self-serve cloud tool
There's a spectrum within "hosted contact center." Some platforms are primarily self-serve: you're given access to a cloud environment and expected to configure, manage, and optimize it yourself. - What channels does it actually support natively? Voice plus email is different from voice, email, SMS, chat, and WhatsApp in a single queue.
- What security certifications does the platform hold? PCI DSS Level 1 and SOC 2/3 are the baseline for most regulated environments.
- What does call recording include? Storage duration, access methods, PII redaction capability, and legal hold support all matter in different operational contexts.
- How does the platform scale? Can agent seats be added or reduced on short notice, or does scaling require procurement cycles?
